IOM Veterans Championship 2019 - Longham

With twenty seven boats entered the race team used two fleets to enable the correct combination of racing, boats on the water and rest.

Racing on the Saturday started on time with an ideal NE – ENE breeze with all competitors enjoying the mid to upper A rig conditions with the odd interesting gust!  PRO Peter Wiles set a long course the length of the available race area with leeward gate with plenty of opportunity for place gains through both course and fleet management & boat speed.

The seeding races were won by Tony Edwards,  and Roger Errington . Racing continued at good pace until a break for lunch @ 12.30.

In the afternoon the wind started veering and backing to the east and back to North, giving plenty of opportunity to recover lost ground after a poor start or after completing a penalty.  By late afternoon the course was completely reset on the other bank with the wind direction now firmly settled in the East, this led to constraints in the course length and a few more contacts with a protest and retirement ensuing.

With no one skipper dominating and race wins going to Richard Aucott, Simon Robinson and two race wins to John Cleave and Tony Edwards results after day one were wide open after seven races at 17:30.

Sunday arrived with lighter winds from the north east, the course was set further down and out from the bank, one race was completed which was won by Simon Robinson before the breeze as forecast became variable and inconsistent.  At which point PRO Peter Wiles and boatman Pete Smith were both kept busy discussing options to keep the fleet on the water, just to further add at this point a small whirlwind dropped on to the race area, ten feet in diameter moving in a NE direction and visible for twenty seconds!

Whilst racing continued, progress was slower due to the course being moved after each heat and by late morning it had shifted a full 180 degrees and back again!  With differing conditions from the previous day, morning race wins were taken out by Tony Edwards, David Adams and Roy Stevens.

A welcome break for lunch allowed the wind to settle with the forecasted South Easterly settling in. This allowed for a good course length with once again conditions allowing for some very close racing.

Tony Edwards continued to take further race wins in the afternoon with Bob Conner and local Poole Skipper Bob Iles also taking race wins.

After two days and fifteen races Tony Edwards sailed and very consistent series to win the Veterans Championship yet again, 14 points further back and another skipper having a consistent series was David Adam. Bob Conner took out third place after a vastly improved second day.

Team V8, Killingworth skippers Roger Errington & Simon Robinson finished a very credible 4th & 5th but no doubt looking at what could have been a podium finish with the evergreen John Cleave also in the hunt back in 6th.

Our thanks to PRO Peter Wiles the entire race team and all @ Poole Radio Yacht Club for once again an enjoyable event.
